Actors!

Main Character:

For our main character in our film we wanted to use a person who seemed like the stereotypical 'London Boy.' Of course we had the advantage of living outside London to be picking up habits from London, particularly the way we speak. As a group we decided it would be more affective to just speak in a plain London accent instead of trying to act like we like in London and trying to use all the slang that many of them use. We found that by using one of our colleagues would be more effective as it would make it more effective than having to find someone who could equally have the same accent and act they were from the rough area as they may over exaggerate the character and it wouldn't be right. Another advantage of using someone in the group was that they had a clear idea of how the character should be potrayed instead of over exaggerating the character, as i previously mentioned other actors may have done.

Nathan Joseph's Opening Sequence Analysis

For my opening scene analysis I chose Kidulthood directed by Menhaj Huda in 2006, I chose Kidulthood as i feel it has the same representation of our movie. They share the same genre and based and targeted towards the lower class youth of London.

Camera
The opening sequence contains many close up shots of the characters, aswell as long shots of the school playground. They show the various gangs or groups of students as they all watch each other. There is many jump cuts involved showing us that theres constantly something happening. As the camera shows us various characters you can tell they are part of the story as everyone one in the background or around them is slightly blurred. Then there is a close up of a boy using a drill showing he is making something but the camera doesn't let us see but they show us metal filings indicating its something crude. There is also a good use of thirds in the opening scene for example a key example is when the boy in normal clothes asks about this claire to what seems to be the bullied of the school the camera cuts to a shot of the gang surrounding the bullied with her in the middle and the gang on theoutsides. As all of this is going on it cuts to students playing football but its also blured showing its important but not to focus on. This can indicate thats its a British film as football is the national sport we play.

Editing
The first thing is that the sequence is very dull based around black, grey and white. This gives that gritty vague feel towards the sequence. The editing in the opening sequence uses a lot to blur. This is used quite often as is shows us various parts of the school playground bluring out general break time happenings then focuses on certain groups. The use of zooming is used as well to get a better sense of emotions of the characters. At the very start there is also ome speeding up and slowing down of the footage giving us that real time feel as though time is flying by. I also feel that your view as an audience is that similar to thats of a police officer as they would inspect the whole situation looking at each of the groups as its gives little details almost as though they were giving their side of the story, this is effective as its very realistic. You can tell the editor of the movie waned to keep it true as possible to real life and did that very well the editing is there but subtle not to dominate the scene.

Mise-En-Scene
The first thing you notice is that they are in school uniforms indicating that they are still in education, but all of them are wearing the uniform to suit the urban style with hoodies and caps/hats with the uniforms indicating their social status being lowerclass. This stereotypically indicates that there is a rough side to these students. The uniforms also idicate that even though they may be rough and trying to act as the top dogs, that they have not experienced the real world. This also tells us that the film will predominantly teen. But then the boys in their normal clothes bullying the 2 girls with there hoods up give them an almost villian like character showing they are different from everyone else. Another important scene is when the teacher directs his words towards the boy and the boy just gives a dirty look which deters the teacher showing the conflict between the teachers and students.

Sound
The sound is both diegetic and non-diegetic as you can hear the sounds from the playground all the talking, shouting and laughing which is general school break time sound. Then its non-diegetic as you get the music playing over the top giving that urban grimey mood to the sequence. It also seems to become more upbeat and louder as people begin to talk showing there is some importance then as there conversation starts flowing it gets quieter for you to hear.

Titles
The opening titles are very breif the use of a black background and white text shows the contrast between the colours. This allows the title to pop out and gab your attention, for you to think about what Kidulthood means. The text use is chunky and bubble like almost giving that cartoon feel again indicating that there still children, but then it has a rigid fuzzy outline giving the rough more older look to it.

Narrative
The story is not really being told by one individual but, giving you an incite into each of the characters the camera focuses on. This suggest that even though they are all connected to each other in some way or another. That they all have their own story to tell. The camera also focuses on each group as they each say their dialogue showing that these students are all looking out for each other so to speak. As you can easily tell the characters are connected it draws you in more to find out how all of them are connected in different ways and how they go about things. As there is multiple characters you cant yet tell that there is a main protangonist but they keep showing us the boy in the workshop, who is making something giving us the sense of him being different to everyone else. But then he hides what we presume to be what he just made in the bin. Then he returns to the group of mates indicating hes almost leading a double life giving us the sense of an enigma. So the audience asks them self who is this boy and why did he conceal something in the bin.

Nathan

Anamika Kayal's Opening Sequence Analysis.

For my analysis I choose Fish Tank as my opening sequence, many elements of Fish Tank resemble the same to our opening sequence largly the representation of the lower class.

The film starts with a mid shot of the main protagonsit sitting on a bench hunched over and than shortly into a wide shot facing a window. The purpose of the shot of the window is to identify 'Mia's' background and her roots, although Mia is shown to the centre of the window (meaning she is in the the centre of the shot) she is shown to the be in the shadows rather than her face being shown as we overlook her background image, this could indicate to an audience member that she lives in the darkness or shadows because of her background because of her lower class status.
The next shot is through the current estate of which Mia lives in the complete focus becomes on Mia and her surroundings. The camera trakcs as the main protagonsit walks through her home enviroment, the track allows the actress to be in the middle of every shot and signifies to the audience she is comfortable in her surroundings as she can move freely. From the use of thirds in the shot gives the impression to the audience she can escape and move if she wishes.
Editing wise, between the two main shots we can see one drastic cut between to two due to the change in location. This cut in particular establishes the character on her own and her as a member of her society. However there is also a cut in the first shot we see between her being shown and the large window, this cut represents that we are shown her culture, background. In conclusion the shot establishes her identity. The soft focus on the character allows the audience to uncover her roots and prepares us for her attitude. As the focus returns to our main character she is turning and cutting to represent the start in her journey she is going on and as an audience we are now joining her.
The mise-en-scene can indicate various things in a film and to normally fit a stereotype. In the film of Fish Tank if follows this convention. Costume wise they place their main character in tracksuit bottoms with a matching hoddie and large gold earrings. By representing the character in this way it gives the audience the typical 'estate girl' as a main character that can be seen in today's societies. The representation of the character can also bring in a specfic type of audience to see how the characters in the film are being represented and engaged them in the film itself. Mia is also shown to be carrying a black draw string bag with her, this continues to stereotype Mia as a 'rough ended' girl. The setting in the opening of the film is what looks like an empty flat, this choice of setting allows the audience to become familar with Mia and gradually becoming more involved in her life as we cut into seeing her home area and soon enough to her house. The use of lighing in this sequence uses a clear white light over the main protgaonist to introduce to the audience who can than become atttached as their main focus is Katie Jarvis. Than shadowing over the main character allows the main focus to become the city for the audience to identify the story through the locations. By than cutting to the lighted shot in the estate area with bright sunlight can signify  to the audience that a new opportunity may soon be approaching for Mia to be happy.
Fish tank opens with digetic sounds of Mia making a phone call to her friend that shes been in a argument with. The purpose of the phone call can represent Mia's confidence with expressing her own views clearly and gives the audience a sense of her negative attitude coming from Mia which can land her in unwanted situations. However by her trying to say sorry to her friend could symbolise to the audience that although Mia may be stubborn she learns that she is wrong over time but sometimes it could be too late.
The title itself are in simple capital block letters in white. The title signifies how Mia is trapped in her typical life similarly to how a fish is trapped in the tank and how without being in that 'tank' she cannot survive but soon realises she found an escape.
The narrative isn't clearly introduced in the opening sequence, however from the sequence we, as an audience member, can see she leads a difficult life from a young age but we can predict that something will happen to create drama which is what the audience are intreseted to find out and would continue to watch as how Mia's life changes.
